Roan Mountain Garden TR 1002
3/19/2024- Roan Mountain Recreation Area will undergo a major renovation this summer, funded by the Great American Outdoors Act.
The Recreation Area will be closed during the repairs.
The area to be closed includes the rhododendron gardens, Roan high bluff, Cloudland parking area, and Cloudland Trail. Carver’s Gap and the Appalachian Trail will remain open, but there is limited parking at Carver’s Gap.
We ask that visitors plan accordingly and contact the District Office (828-689-9694) if they have any questions or visit www.roanhighlands.org for alternative hikes.
On a clear day you can enjoy views of Mount Mitchell, Grandfather Mountain, Table Rock and Hump Mountain. This trail passes through a large patch of Catawba rhododendrons and consists of two loops. The upper loop is wheelchair accessible, while the lower loop has several steps. There are 16 interpretive stops on the upper loop trail. The stops correspond with a trail guide that is available at the parking area. An observation deck is located at the upper loop. Restrooms, water and picnic tables are available at the parking lot.
