Buck Creek Trail #1513
August 2022 -- The small 6-acre Buck Creek Fire is burning in the Glacier Peak Wilderness. The fire was caused by lightning on August 11 and started mid-slope then spread outward due to some spotting. The upper side of the fire is surrounded by very green grass. Fire behavior has been minimal, the fire has been smoldering and creeping along the ground. Crews hiked in to the fire on August 21 and reported that the fire was slowly spreading outward.
Recreationists can still use the trail system in that area, just be aware the fire is burning near Buck Creek Pass, close to where the horse camps are located. No trail closures are in effect, we just ask recreationists to be aware of their surroundings and pay attention to any increase in smoke volume in that vicinity which might indicate increased fire activity.
WARNING: The bridge over Chiwawa River at 2.5 mile point collapsed from heavy winter snow. There is a log upstream of bridge to cross on. Fording river at this point would be difficult and dangerous in high water conditions.
The Buck Creek Trail is 9.6 miles long, with an elevation gain of 2800 feet, and is primarily used by hikers and stock users. This heavily used trail with gentle grades accesses the Buck Pass and Pass No Pass areas and the Chiwawa River Trail #1550 within Glacier Peak Wilderness. The Buck Creek Trail ends at Buck Creek Pass at the forest boundary. Here the trail connects with Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest Trail #789, which meets up with Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. The Buck Creek Trail is rated a moderate difficulty hike.
