The Wynoochee area is a remote getaway in the southern area of Olympic Peninsula. Steep, rugged peaks frame the lush conifer and hardwood forested shores of Wynoochee Lake which provides ample opportunity for swimming, boating, and fishing.

Recreation sites in the Wynoochee area


 Maidenhair Falls

Follow a short trail to view Spoon Creek Falls or visit Maidenhair Falls on the north side of the lake. Day-hike to Satsop Lakes, or follow the Wynoochee Pass Trail to the Olympic National Park boundary. Take a short .5 mile hike into Satsop Lakes, 5 small lakes accessible from Church Creek Trail. Continue on Church Creek Trail and meander through old growth and across a pass between Wynoochee and Skokomish drainages.

 Wynoochee Lakeshore Trail

Coho Campground offers a large camping, boat launch, and day use facility with amenities on the banks of Wynoochee Lake. There are also many dispersed camping opportunities along the lakeshore.

The Wynoochee Lakeshore Trail loops around the lake and has multiple starting points.


From Shelton, WA take Highway 101 north then take Route 102 (Dayton-Airport Rd.) for 5 miles to Dayton-Matlock Road and turn right, go 9.4 miles to Matlock, continue straight at the junction onto the Matlock-Deckerville Road, which turns into the Boundary Road. Drive 8.8 miles, make a right turn onto Cougar-Smith Road, drive 5.5 miles to Forest Service Road #22 (The distance from Highway 101 to Forest Service Road #22 is 29 miles).

Turn right on Forest Service Road 22 and drive 15 miles to a major intersection. Turn left, stay on Forest Service Road #22, drive a short distance, turn right on Forest Service Road #2294. Drive 1 mile to Coho Campground and Day Use area.

Access Roads to Wynoochee area:

  1. U.S. Highway 101 to Donkey Creek Road near Humptulips,
  2. U.S. Highway 101 to Wynooche Valley Road near Montesano,
  3. or Forest Service Road 23 from the Skokomish area.
