Area Status: Open
The Bassam Guardstation and Cabin is located southeast of Buena Vista, Colorado just off of Forest Roads 307 and 187. The cabin was built around 1911 and was home to a Forest guard. Forest guards lived and worked in remote areas on National Forest lands. Early Forest guards lived in tents or if they were lucky, in a cabin like the Bassam Guardstation. These hardy men monitored sheep and cattle grazing allotments, managed timber harvesting, apprehended poachers and wrote reports about conditions on our National Forests.
The cabin is tiny but has a full-sized bed, a small table with 2 chairs and a propane stove. Maximum occupancy for the site is 8 people with the cabin able to sleep two adults. Tent camping or pop-up campers can use the small area around the cabin but space is limited especially for vehicles pulling campers.
Water is available at a handpump but it is always a good idea to bring extra drinking water. Visitors may gather downed and dead wood from the nearby forest for evening campfires. A metal fire ring is provided.
Horses may be picketed or corraled outside of the fenced and gated area at the entrance to the cabin site. The use of portable corral is permitted outside of the gated area but it must be moved every few days to prevent damage to vegetation and soils.
