La Garita Stock Driveway Trail #787
The historical La Garita Stock Driveway. trail is 91.9 miles long. It begins at Forest Road 670 and ends at Forest Trail 789 (Wason Park).
This trail is considered the Ole' La Garita Stock Driveway. Historically it's been used to drive livestock (sheep and cattle) to the high country. Grazing permittees continue to use it during the summer months. Presently the trail is being used mostly by recreationists. The trail will take you through a variety of scenic views, vegetation and elevations. This trail also borders the southern end of the La Garita Wilderness. Mesa Mountain is over 13,000 feet in elevation and offers spectacular views of the San Luis Valley and the San Juan Mountains. Read about Fremont's expedition for more information.
The trail is open for the following uses: Horseback Riding, Motorcycle Trail Riding, Off Highway Vehicles (OHV) less than or equal to 50 inches wide, mountain biking, foot and horse travel. The upper section between Palmer Mesa and Wason Park lies within the La Garita Wilderness and is only open to foot and horse travels.

General Information
Directions: From the town of Del Norte, travel northeast on State Hwy 112 for 3 miles. Turn left and travel north on County Road 38A for 6.5 miles. Turn left and travel west on Forest Road 670 for 5 miles. The Trailhead is on your right side and crosses the creek heading to the northwest up the fork called Little La Garita creek.Activities
