Lower Rogue River Trail #1168

Area Status: Closed

NOTE (July 2021): There is an extensive rock fall across this trail in the area of Copper Canyon that has created a VERY dangerous situation. The slide has resulted in 40 feet of tread sliding away completely, with extreme exposure to a rocky cliff 200 feet below.  THE TRAIL IS IMPASSABLE. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CROSS AT THIS POINT. The closure is 3.75 miles west of the Agness trailhead and 9.6 miles east from the Silver Creek area trailhead.

Rock Fall Location: Latitude 42.559444, Longitude-124.104993

We are working to make this trail safe again. Thank you for your patience. If you have questions, please contact the Gold Beach Ranger District: (541) 247-3600.

The trail offers a scenic trek through one of Oregon's majestic rain forests. Wildlife is abundant, and possible animal sightings include, black bear, deer, and raccoons. The grade is gentle along most of the trail, with a few moderate slopes. The trail crosses a series of creeks, including a scenic waterfall at Auberry Creek. It also goes through Adams Prairie, site of an old Curry County homestead and school. Vegetation along the trail is rich and varied. Old-growth Douglas-fir over 500 years old can be seen, as well as dozens of varieties of wildflowers. The intermittent creeks crossing the trail offer a refreshing break and interesting views.

There is some poison oak, so hikers should be careful. Horses are permitted, but NOT recommended due to safety reasons; the trail has many narrow, rocky bluffs.
