Island Lake Trail (#4E05)

The trail begins off the Doe Flat Road and descends along an old road for three miles to a beautiful little camp along the South Fork Smith River. After crossing the river, you will enter the Siskiyou Wilderness where the trail climbs steeply through old growth forests and ends at picturesque Island Lake.

Restrictions: | There are no closed gates that limit access to the trailhead from the north (off of Highway 199) via Forest Service Primary Route 16 (also known as Forest Service Secondary Route 17N05, the Jawbone Road, and Little Jones Creek Road); however, the road is usually blocked by snow during the wet season (generally November through mid-June, rarely into July). Trailhead access from the south via Forest Service Primary Route 16/Forest Service Seconday Route 16N02 (Ship Mountain area) is limited by gate closures due to snow and Port Orford Cedar root disease during the wet season, generally mid-October through mid-June (rarely into July). |
