The North Wrangell High Country Shelter on Wrangell Island is a 3-sided shelter accessible by hiking the North Wrangell Trail. Located at the highest point along the trail, the site provides excellent views of the mainland and surrounding islands. .

Directions: Option 1 - 3.5 miles from the Rainbow Falls Trailhead via Rainbow Falls Trail to Institute Creek Trail to North Wrangell Trail for a 2,500 foot elevation gain. Option 2 - 2.6 miles from the North Wrangell Trailhead on the Spur Road Extension for a 2,000 foot elevation gain.
Provides opportunity for solitude and spectacular views. Some firewood may be available at shelter, shelter is near tree line.
Excellent opportunity for snowshoeing and backcountry skiing in winter. Use caution in lower elevations as boardwalk will be snow covered and icy. North Wrangell High Country shelter is not a four season shelter, may not be suitable for overnight use in winter months as shelter is open to prevailing wind and may fill with snow.
