Directions: Located on the northern side of the head of Mitchell Bay and northwest of S. America Island. Access by boat, float plane and canoe/portage across the island. One-way flight time from Juneau is approximately 45 minutes. Suggested USGS topo maps: Sitka C-2Activities

Admiralty Island's varied pristine ecotypes provide extraordinary plant viewing from miles of shoreline and a trail system that leads to Salt Lake, Freshwater Lake, Thayer and Davidson Lakes. The area displays temperate rainforest, ocean shoreline and muskeg meadow plant communities. This shelter is on the cross Admiralty canoe route.Species | Admiralty Island comprises one of the greatest remaining blocks of productive old-growth temperate rain forest in the world. Alpine, tidal marsh and muskeg meadows are some of the other plant communities. The temperate rainforest primarily consist of western and mountain hemlock, Sitka spruce, alder, yellow cedar and shore pine. Forest understory consists primarily of blueberry, huckleberry, salmonberry, thimbleberry, fern, mosses ,devils club, false azalea, mushrooms and dwarf dogwood. |
