General Information
Directions: Located 6.5 miles north of Sitka on Halibut Point Road; before Starrigavan Estuary turn onto Nelson Logging Road (also road to rifle range) and follow road to parking area just before the rifle range. Trail is just beyond the gate on the north side of the parking lot.
Easy trail for hikers. Much of the trail is an old logging road. A research area is located along the left of the trail for the first 1.5 miles. The area has strips of thinned and pruned trees along it to demonstrate effects of forest management on young trees. Rearing ponds for salmon have been developed near the trail to improve fish habitat. Timber harvesting occurred in the valley in the mid 1960’s. Much of the trail is lined with salmonberry bushes and alder and extends up both the north and south branches of the valley. The tread is native soil and rock. The trail crosses several bridges over Starrigavan Creek where salmon spawn. Refer to the Sitka Motor Vehicle Use Map (SMVUM) on the Tongass website for a map of this multi-use trail.
