Castle Flats Cabin

The Castle Flats single level hunter style cabin has an oil heater (#1 stove oil only), 4 single bunks, wood stove, woodshed, axe/maul, wooden table and benches, counter, rowboat with oars, and pit-type outhouse. Life jackets, stove oil, bedding, and cooking utensils are not provided. Firewood is provided for wood stove use only, but is not guaranteed. The area near the cabin is predominantly flat; old growth forest, muskeg and riparian.

General Information

Directions:

16 air miles (25 km) or 30 water miles (48 km) from Petersburg on the edge of the mud flats of Castle River, on the west side of Duncan Canal on Kupreanof Island


General Notes:

 

The cabin is accessible only by boat or float plane from Petersburg, and tides impact access. During low tides, a 2-mile hike is necessary to reach the cabin. A minimum of a 13’ tide is required to reach the cabin.

River and Stream Fishing

Day Hiking

The 1.1-mile long Castle River Trail connects the Castle Flats Cabin to the Castle River Cabin. The trail continues beyond the river cabin to a rowboat and access to fishing holes.

Boating - Motorized

The cabin can be accessed by boat from Petersburg, but requires a 13' tide. Access to Duncan Canal and Sumner Strait.
