Cholla

  

This is the largest all-solar powered campground in the United States. The Forest Service constructed it in cooperation with the Bureau of Reclamation. Cholla Recreation Site is located on Theodore Roosevelt Lake, central Arizona’s largest lake. There are 206 camp units w/ shade ramadas, fire rings w/ grills, picnic tables, potable water hydrants. Toilets and showers are located throughout the camp loops, playgrounds, paved boat launch and fish cleaning station. Cholla RV dump station across highway is open Thurs. & Fri. from 12pm - 2pm.

Fees Tonto Pass Required: $6.00 per vehicle, per day; $4.00 per watercraft, per day.

Restrictions: Stay limit 14 days, trailers under 32'. Rules and regulations are posted on bulletin board. Please read and observe. Please use trash receptacles, when available, or pack it in pack it out.

General Information

Directions:

This site is 5 miles north of Roosevelt Dam. From Mesa: Take State Hwy. 87/Beeline Highway north for about 60 miles to its junction with State Hwy. 188. Turn right and follow State Hwy. 188 south for 28 miles to the site.

From the Globe area: Take State Hwy. 188 north for 30 miles to its junction with State Hwy. 188. Continue on State Hwy. 188 across the bridge for 6 miles to the site.

Campground Camping

Winter long-term camping from Oct. 1-Mar. 31, 206 camp units (tent-only, single and double) with shade ramadas, fire rings with grills, picnic tables, and water hydrants. Toilets and showers are located throughout the camp loops. There are also playgrounds. Nearby is a paved boat launch ramp and fish-cleaning station.
