Flat Rock Trail #1526
Flat Rock is the site of a fire lookout tree which was once used as an observation point. A fire lookout tree is a type of fire lookout that requires attaching a device such as a ladder or spikes to a tall, straight tree so that lookout personnel can easily ascend to survey their surroundings. Although no longer in use for this purpose, the original fire lookout platform—now grown into the tree—can still be seen. After a steep climb to the top, the summit provides wonderful views of the surrounding forests, as well as Hemlock Lake, Mt. Thielsen, and Mt. Bailey. Wildflowers are plentiful throughout the summer months.
