Mt. Timpanogas, Pleasant Grove Ranger District

The majestic Mt. Timpanogos towers over the Pleasant Grove Ranger District and beckons hikers from all over the State to its summit.  In fact, the District is a popular destination due to its diversity of year-round recreation. The American Fork Canyon-Alpine Loop Recreation area is a particular favorite, offering fishing, family camping, arduous cycling, snow-mobiling, ATV-ing, and rock-climbing.  The District is also home to a herd of Rocky Mountain Sheep and maintaining a healthy ecosystem for this species and many others is a priority.

Timpanogos Cave, Trail and Visitor Center are closed for the 2015 season.

The visitor center is located in American Fork Canyon on Hwy 92 just 10 miles east of interstate 15 and 17.2 miles from U.S. 189.  Aproximately 40 miles from Salt Lake City. 
Reservations: The National Recreaton Reservation Service takes reservations for most campgrounds up to 240 days in advance at 1-877-444-6777 or on the internet at  These sites can be reserved no less than 5 days in advance.
Fees American Fork Recreation Fee Area Welcome to the American Fork Canyon-Alpine Loop Recreation Area. Recreation Fee Schedule:
  • 3-day Pass          $6.00
  • 7-day Pass          $12.00
  • Annual Pass        $45.00
  America the Beautiful Passes are honored in the American Fork Recreation Area and are sold at the Information Stations on the Alpine Loop Road, Timpanogos Cave National Monument Visitor Center, and at the Pleasant Grove Ranger District Office.

Permit Info: The Pleasant Grove Ranger District does not issue firewood or Christmas Tree cutting permits.
Restrictions: Utah Department of Transportation has closed the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway (SR92) as of November 1, 2015.
