Reconstructed in 2008, it now includes pull-through trailer parking areas under the cool pine and fir trees. The Whitman Ranger District has completed Hazard Tree evaluations for the Southfork, Stevens Creek, and Elk Creek Campgrounds. Defects were documented and recorded for trees according to Regional Guidelines for Developed Recreation Sites in Oregon and have been targeted for removal through a small timber sale after rifle deer hunting general season in the fall of 2016. This activity will not affect the 2017 season or the overall recreation experience at this popular camping destination. As part of Wallowa-Whitman Nation Forest long term planning for vegetative management and visitor safety, this process identifies and mitigates hazards and reduces them to an acceptable level.
