Rock Springs Trailhead


Area Status: Open

The Rock Springs Trailhead is often used to gain quick access on the Rock Springs Trail #1928 to the connecting trails on the Little Minam and Minam Rivers in the Eagle Cap Wilderness. This minimally developed trailhead is also popular for mushrooming in the Spring, and picking huckleberries in the Fall.

Permit Info: All visitors to the Eagle Cap Wilderness must obtain a Wilderness Visitor Permit before entering the area. Only one permit is required per group and there is no fee for the permits. Registration and Permit boxes are located at each trailhead near the information board. The permits are self-issued.

  • Motorized vehicles, bicycles, carts, hang glider and other mechanical equipment is prohibited in the Wilderness area.

Directions:

From La Grande, Oregon travel east on Highway 82 (Wallowa Lake Highway) for 20 miles to Elgin, Oregon; In Elgin continue on Highway 82 for 5.1 miles to Hindman Road; Turn right on Hindman Road (County Road 59) and go about 8.5 miles and road will become Forest Road 62; Continue on Forest Road 62 for 9.5 miles to trailhead on right side of road.
