Indian Rock Trail #1648

The Indian Rock Trail is located north of Phillips Lake and the Union Creek Recreation Area. The trail is a short hike from Union Creek Campground and has some panoramic views of the lake and upper valley. The trail is often accessible early in the spring after the snow melts.

Difficulty level:
The lower section of the trail from the highway to the Union Creek road is easy, however as it climbs the forested slope and approaches the ridge top it becomes 'more difficult'.

Phillips Lake Trails

General Information

There are 3 access points for this trail.

1.  From Baker City, OR, travel south on Highway 7 for about 17 miles to Forest Road 2225; This road is located before the turn-off to the Union Creek Campground; Turn right (north) on the Forest Road 2225 and go about 0.3 miles; Look for the small wooden sign on the tree designating the beginning of the trail on the right side (away from the creek). Parking is at the roadside turnout.

2. From Baker City, OR, travel south on Highway 7 for about  17 miles to Forest Road 280; Forest Road 280 is past Forest Service 2225 road on the left but before the Union Creek Campground entrance on your right; Turn left off the highway onto Forest Road 280 and go up the small hill through the gate.; The trail cuts across Forest Road 280; It then cuts across Forest Road 2225 and continues up the hill.

3. Visitors to Union Creek Campground can also walk directly across Highway 7 and follow the trail to the right of the dry creek bed, or catch it by Forest Road 280 on the hill across from the campground entrance.

This trail is not accessible for people with disabilities.
