Coffee Pot and White Owl Campgrounds CLOSED in 2018
Unfortunately, the District had to make the hard decision to close two campgrounds in the Flattops area: Coffee Pot and White Owl sites. The District operates the developed site program on a tight budget and these two sites had the lowest occupancy rates, highest maintenance needs, and lowest generated revenue. The difficult decision was made in the fall of 2018 to completely remove the White Owl Campground including its features; being the toilet, fire rings, tables, and also its road system. All of the features were in an unsafe condition and the sites were extremely too close to water to allow continued dispersed use. The Coffee Pot campground’s road system was left intact (Road 600.1L) and is open to all motorized use. The features were removed including the toilet, tables, and fire rings. Again, these features were in extremely unsafe condition.
The District chose to invest the limited financial and workforce resources into the Deep Lake Campground and Day Use sites. This site has the highest occupancy of either of the two other sites, and the lowest maintenance costs since the features are in better condition. Over time the District hopes to continue to make improvements at Deep Lake and have more of a presence at this campground.
