Fish Lake Interpretive Day Use

This site is the gateway to the historic Fish lake Remount Depot along the McKenzie-Santiam segment of the West Cascades National Scenic Byway.

Fish Lake Interpretive Area and nearby Fish Lake Remount Depot was once one of the most developed stops on the Santiam Wagon Road. In the early 1920s and 1930s, Fish Lake became the main dispatching point for fire control in the Santiam Forest. When the Santiam and Cascade Forests were combined, Fish Lake became part of the Willamette National Forest.

Fish Lake contains water only during the winter and spring months. The water drains to underground sources beginning in June and is usually empty by July.
