District Information

The Baldwin/White Cloud District is the southern most district on the Manistee portion of the Huron-Manistee National Forests. The elevation ranges from 850 to 1,000 feet in the 500,000 acres managed by the Baldwin/White Cloud Ranger District. The town of Baldwin is located in the northernmost part of the district and is the county seat for Lake County. 

Location

Baldwin is located in Lake County near the Baldwin River, on the township lines for Webber and Pleasent Valley Townships.

Climate

The climate is generally mild and wet with an average rainfall of 15 inches. There are four distinct seasons, with summer having an average maximum temperature of 84 °F, with night-time temperatures around 60 degrees. The average winter temperature is around 30 degrees with an average snowfall of 70.6 inches a year and an average  snow depth of 3.1 feet.

District Information

The Cadillac/Manistee Ranger District is the northernmost district on the Manistee portion of the Huron-Manistee National Forests.  This district manages 250,000 acres with elevation ranging from 850 - 1,000 feet.  The town of Manistee is located on Lake Michigan and borders the western portion of the district.  The district encompasses as far north to Mesick, west to Cadillac, and south to Freesoil.  The Baldwin/White Cloud District borders the Cadillac/Manistee District to the south.  Manistee is the county seat for Manistee County.

Location

The Cadillac/Manistee Ranger Station is located in Manistee on the east shore of Lake Michigan.  It is around 60 miles from Traverse City and Cadillac, and 80 miles north of Muskegon.  The population of Manistee is around 6,600, with a significant climb in population during summer months. 

Climate

Manistee has a temperate climate with well-defined seasons.  Annual precipitation is estimated at about 40 inches with about 30% occurring during the summer seasons. Summers are mild with average temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.  Day time temperatures occasionally reach 90 degrees or more, while night-time temperatures hover around 60 degrees.

The average snowfall is 57 inches, with an average snow depth of 3 feet.  This snowfall, coupled with moderate winter temperatures, provide better then average conditions for winter sports.

The Huron Shores District is the eastern most district on the Huron-Manistee National Forests. The elevation ranges from 850 to 1,000 feet in the 500,000 acres managed by the Huron Shores Ranger District.

Location

Oscoda is located in Iosco County, at an elevation of approximately 600 ’. The population of the Oscoda area is approximately 1,000.

Climate

The climate is mild and dry with warm days and cool nights in the summer. Rainfall averages 28 inches. There are usually over 50 sunny days a year with four seasons. The average maximum temperature in July is 78 °F, while the average minimum temperature in July is 56 °F. The average maximum temperature in January is 33 °F, while the average minimum temperature in January is 17 °F. There is an average snowfall of 76.9 inches a year, with a snow depth average of 3.8 feet.

District Information

The Mio District is the western most district on the Huron portion of the Huron-Manistee National Forests. The elevation ranges from 850 to 1,000 feet in the 500,000 acres managed by the Mio Ranger District.

Location

Mio is located in Oscoda County, at an elevation of approximately 1,020 ’. Mio is the county seat of Oscoda County and is located on the boundary between Mentor and Big Creek Township. The population of the Mio area is approximately 2,016. 

Climate

The climate is mild and dry with warm days and cool nights in the summer. Rainfall averages 28 inches. There are usually over 50 sunny days a year with four seasons. The average maximum temperature in July is 79 °F, while the average minimum temperature in July is 52 °F. The average maximum temperature in January is 32 °F, while the average minimum temperature in January is 12 °F. There is an average snowfall of 25 inches a year, with a snow depth average of 3.8 feet.
