Volunteer with us!
Volunteers are recognized as a strong part of the culture at Midewin and help staff accomplish ambitious goals. Midewin attracts individuals and groups with a variety of backgrounds and interests. Some volunteers join us a couple times a year and others are here weekly. Volunteers offer a wide range of skills and are also motivated by learning new ones. It may be a good idea to try a few projects or programs until you feel that perfect fit.
First, we recommend checking out a few position descriptions in each department listed below. If any of them spark your curiosity, then you should click New Volunteer Info to follow some additional steps, including filling out an application. If you prefer to talk with the volunteer coordinator before these steps, contact Allison Cisneros at (815) 423-6370 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Join restoration assistants for planting, brush cutting, harvesting seed and more. Volunteer days are scheduled every Thursday year round, rain or shine. We have occasional Saturday events too.
Monitor and report back on the state of Midewin's birds, butterflies, frogs, plants and streams.
Help spread the word about Midewin's unique history and mission; lead youth education and stewardship activities; engage the public with special programs and tours; and create a fun experience for Midewin's visitors!
Work with a partner or team to enhance recreation experiences for visitors on our 30+ miles of trail by reporting safety hazards, managing invasive or encroaching plants, interacting with trail users, and making suggestions for improvements.
Heritage volunteers learn and uncover exciting land use, cultural history, and prehistory of this area. These discoveries can influence best management practices and protect sensitive heritage sites and habitat. Some opportunities include archeological surveys, artifact curation, historic farmstead restoration, heritage research, oral history recording and transcribing, and many other projects as they come up.
