Travel Management Planning

UPDATE: (June 2013)

When will the FEIS be Released?

The Gila National Forest is completing edits to the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS). Kelly Russell, the Forest Supervisor, is reviewing the analysis of alternatives, public comments, and other project information, and is formulating her decision. Once the decision is made, the Record of Decision (ROD) and FEIS will be sent out for publishing. When the forest receives the printed ROD and FEIS, the public will be notified when the ROD and FEIS will be distributed (estimated August 2013 release). The forest will publish a notice of decision in the Federal Register shortly after distribution, which will mark the start of the 45 day appeal period.

 UPDATE: (February 2013)

On February 4, 2013, the Gila National Forest gave a presentation to the Grant County Commissioners on the status of Travel Management. Below is a copy of the presentation.

*The final EIS and Record of Decision (ROD) is estimated to be completed this spring.

UPDATE: (June 2012)

The Whitewater-Baldy fire and associated fire rehabilitation work are a priority for the Forest.  Many of the Forest’s Travel Management team members were heavily involved with the fire and now with the ongoing rehabilitation work.

The Forest is moving back the estimated release date of the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) and Record of Decision (ROD). We are anticipating release in the latter part of the fall or early winter.

Release of Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) Delayed (Sep 2011)

The Travel Management Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) expected to be released this past summer by the Gila National Forest has been delayed. Spring of 2012 is currently the anticipated date of release for the FEIS and accompanying Record of Decision (ROD).

In January of this year, the forest released the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for Travel Management. The comment period for the DEIS ended in March with over 2,000 comments received. The forest is currently reviewing the comments and moving towards developing the FEIS and the ROD.

The comments have been broken down and grouped by subject. Click on the link below. The document is located under the heading: "Analysis Documents".

Open House/Public Meeting Schedule

No open houses or public meetings are scheduled at this time.

A series of open houses were held to provide an opportunity for reviewing, asking questions, and commenting on the DEIS for travel management. The following document summarizes the information and material that were on display at the open houses:

Background:

On November 9, 2005, the Forest Service published a new Travel Management Rule, governing off-highway vehicles (OHV) and other motor vehicle use on national forests and grasslands. The new rule requires each national forest to designate those roads, trails, and areas open to motor vehicle use.
