Eureka, CA - On Friday, June 3, the Ninth Annual Klamath-Trinity Fish Fair will be celebrating the return of spring and the salmon in the classrooms of over 1000 elementary and high-school students. The Fair, which has been held every spring since 2002, will take place concurrently at Trinity Valley Elementary School, Hoopa Valley Elementary School, and Orleans Elementary School, and will include students from the entire Klamath-Trinity Joint Unified School District and beyond. Community members are also encouraged to attend this free event, which will be from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm.

The 2011 theme, “Take Only What You Need,” encourages students and presenters alike to reflect on how to protect and conserve the land and environment while still benefitting from the gifts that it offers. Over 50 presenters from across California, including 17 from the Six Rivers National Forest (NF), will be providing Fair-goers with the latest in biological research, sharing sustainable living practices and honoring local culture and traditions. At Hoopa Valley Elementary School, this year’s keynote address will be by Caleen Sisk-Franco, a spiritual leader of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, who will talk about “Dance our Salmon Home”.

The Fish Fair is organized each year through the joint efforts of the teachers and administrators of the Klamath-Trinity Joint Unified School District and Six Rivers NF Orleans Ranger District (RD) Fisheries Program; aided heavily by the efforts of the AmeriCorps Watershed Stewards Project members.

Hoopa Valley Elementary School teacher Teresa Cyr and Orleans RD Fisheries Biologist LeRoy Cyr, who have been at the helm of the Fair's organization since its inception, have expressed their commitment to the Fair, stating, “We want to continue to raise environmental awareness and inspire our kids and the local river communities to be conscious and proactive stewards in protecting, enhancing and restoring our natural resources.”
