REDDING, Calif. - The Jones Valley Resort on Shasta Lake, part of the Shasta Lake National Recreation Area, was approved for Clean and Green marina certification on June 8, 2010. The Clean Marinas Program is a partnership of private marina owners, government marina operators and yacht clubs in California. The program was developed to provide clean facilities to the boating community and protect the state's waterways from pollution. The Jones Valley Resort is one of about 90 Clean Marinas in California.
The program certification process goes through a checklist of elements that marinas are scored on to determine certification. The list includes emergency action plans, fuel and oil containment plans, and enforcing existing local, state and federal regulations for marine sanitation. Each category has mandatory points assigned and the marinas must have 210 points to pass for certification.
"The process is relatively simple and is something a lot of marinas owners and operators practice on a regular basis," Mike Han, Chief Operations Officer of Houseboats.com, said. "It just makes sense when you operate properly and follow the regulations, why not go through the process to be certified."
The Jones Valley Resort is about 20 minutes from Redding on the Pit River arm of Shasta Lake and operates under a special use permit with the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The marina has been in existence since the 1950’s and was purchased by Houseboats.com in 1989 with a few buildings, a small marina and no staff. The Resort now has multiple buildings, houseboats for rent, a marina store and a 40-person staff.
"We think this is such a great program and would really like to see more of our permittees get involved in this program," Kristy Cottini, Shasta Lake National Recreation Area District Ranger said. "Right now the Jones Valley Resort is the only marina on Shasta Lake to earn the status of a Clean Marina. It would be great to see all of the marina permittees have this certification."
Shasta Lake has 10 marinas that operate under a special use permit.
