MCCLOUD, Calif. - Fall mushroom season will be starting soon across the three National Forests within the Medicine Lake Highlands region of northern California. The Klamath, Modoc and Shasta-Trinity National Forests will begin selling commercial use permits on September 7, 2010. The last day for picking mushrooms will be November 7, 2010 when the permits will expire.
Commercial use permits are issued on an individual basis. Several different types of commercial use permits are available for purchase:
Minimum 5-day permit is $35.00; and $7.00 each additional day (for example a 7-day permit is $49.00)
A thirty-day permit is $100.00
Full season permit is $200.00
In order to ensure the sustainability of the Matsutake mushroom harvest, which takes place during the fall, each permit has additional conditions and restrictions which are intended to regulate the harvest. A map and handouts with restrictions and regulations will be provided at the time of purchase. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to read and understand permit conditions. Forest Service law enforcement officers will be patrolling the harvest areas to ensure compliance with the terms and conditions of the permits. Commercial permits must be purchased to re-sell any products removed from National Forests.
