LA County proposes to install a 20'x19' concrete pad, a 12' diameter by 7' high water tank, and 120' of copper pipe in a 2'x3' trench, to carry water to the crew room. This project area is currently permitted for occupancy by search/rescue personnel.
The purpose of the project is to provide a potable water source for LA County Sheriff's personnel at an existing permitted facility. After completion, potable water will be trucked to the tank every 1-2 months. By placing water facilities within an existing permit area, the project is consistent with Goal 7.1 in the Land Management Plan, to focus the built environment into the minimum land area necessary to accommodate public needs. Program strategies from Part 2 of the LMP, for protection of plant, wildlife, and watershed values, will be made a part of the project through interdisciplinary review. The design and materials for the tank will be consistent with LMP Standards (Part 3) for scenic integrity.
Barley Flats is approximately 2 miles east of the junction of Angeles Crest and Upper Big Tujunga Highways, and 8 miles north of the City of Sierra Madre.
