Wayne NF headquarters and Athens Ranger District officeWelcome to the Wayne National Forest located in the hills of southeastern Ohio.  The Forest is a patchwork ownership that covers over a quarter million acres of Appalachian foothills. The Forest is divided into three blocks managed out of two Ranger District offices located in Nelsonville and Ironton with a field office in Marietta.

On November 12, 2010, the Forest  officially celebrated its 75th anniversary as a national forest in Ohio.

The Forest has over 300 miles of trails for hiking, all-terrain vehicle riding, mountain biking, or horseback riding in season.  The off-highway vehicle trails are open from April 15th through December 15th. In 2011. The Forest has implemented new policies for alcohol restrictions and helmet with eye protection requirements on motorized trails

Endangered Species Return to the Forest

American burying beetle and dead rodent.

For the fourth year endangered American burying beetle were released on the Wayne NF. The beetle had been extirpated from Ohio since 1974 when it was last seen in Hocking County.
