Voices of the Wilderness is a unique artist residency being offered by the U.S. Forest Service this summer. Nationally, residencies on our public lands typically focus on scenery, hosting artists in cabins or other administrative facilities, often with little participation from agency personnel. On the Tongass and Chugach, we want to engage artists on a deeper level, maybe even get their hands a little dirty. So we made stewardship a central part of the residency experience. We hoped that by giving artists a hands-on idea of what goes into taking care of our public lands that we would stir some passion, which would ultimately come across in their artwork.
