Who are we and what do we do?

This program attempts a different approach in the way it recruits, trains, mentors, and develops entry-level firefighters. Our goal is to provide the Region and the Forest Service with a pool of well-trained, high-character candidates for potential future recruitment. How we do this is by bringing together a diverse group of people, from many walks of life, and providing them with solid mentorship, relevant training opportunities, and the best fire related working experience possible.

The vision of Margarita Phillips, Program Manager of the Great Northern and twenty-plus year Missoula Smokejumper, is to emphasize two crucial aspects during a firefighter's "Foundation Years" - what she refers to as the first two to three seasons of a firefighter's career: 1) Training, and 2) Developing a strong work ethic. With a solid foundation to build from our crew members will leave with a great potential for future success on whatever path they so choose.

Our goal is to invest our time and energy in developing each of our crewmembers, providing them with the physical and mental tools, and developing the work habits requisite of all good firefighters.  The program holds strong to the belief that we are not only training entry-level firefighters, but also the potential leaders of tomorrow's fire and land management organizations.

Candidates who are selected for the Great Northern Fire Crew will receive spend a great deal of training, mentorship, and career-based counseling for the future in their first season. The second season, for crewmembers who are invited back, represents a chance for more advanced training and leadership opportunities. In the third season opportunities for further leadership or advanced training will be extended to candidates, as well as the potential opportunity to be placed or detailed out to a different crew, district, or apparatus. Even when their time with the Great Northern is over, we pledge to continue to work with our crewmembers in the pursuit of their unique career path.
