Forest Service Chief Announces Change in Headquarters Staff

U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service Chief Dale Bosworth today appointed Fred Norbury as associate deputy chief for the national forest system. Norbury replaces Gail Kimbell who moved to the agency’s Northern Region (Missoula, Mont.) as regional forester.

“Fred is one of the most knowledgeable people in the Forest Service about the implementation of the National Forest Management Act and the National Environmental Policy Act both of which are critical to the position of associate deputy chief for the national forest system,” said Bosworth. “His knowledge will be an invaluable asset in this new assignment.”

Norbury previously served as the national director of ecosystem management coordination, a position he has held since 2001. Prior to 2001, Norbury was director of ecosystem planning and budget in the Alaska Region for the Forest Service for 12 years. He also had previous assignments in the agency’s Washington Office on the policy analysis and land management planning staffs.

“This is a time of change for the Forest Service,” said Norbury. “It’s an exciting time to work here and an honor to be chosen for this particular job.”

Norbury is a graduate of Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He also has a master’s degree in public policy from Princeton University and a master’s degree in forestry from the University of California. He served in the Peace Corps in Guatemala prior to his Forest Service career.

Norbury assumes his new duties immediately.
