Snowmobiling
The Allegheny National Forest has over 365 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in interconnected loops.
General Information
- Registration: must be registered with PA-DCNR or a reciprocating state. Contact the PA-DCNR at 1-866-545-2476 or visit their website for more information.
- Children 15 or younger: must be directly supervised by an adult 18 years or older AND have a safety certificate. To inquire about trainings contact:

- the Pennsylvania State Snowmobile Association (PSSA) at 1-888-411-7772
- Caution: Many snowmobile trails are located on joint use roads. Users may encounter motor vehicles, dog sled teams, and cross-country skiers at any time.
- Know Your Trail: obey all posted signage, stay on established trails and yield to groomers.
- Grooming: Snowmobile trails are groomed during the night (Thursday through Monday).
- Multi-Use Trail System: Many snowmobile trails are located on joint use roads, which may be plowed. Users may encounter heavy equipment, motor vehicles, dog sled teams, and x-country skiers at any time.
- Allegheny Reservoir: ALL motorized vehicles, including, but not limited to snowmobiles, ATVs and amphibious watercraft are prohibited on the Allegheny Reservoir’s frozen surface.

Trail Condition Reports
The trail conditions report is updated on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Forest Service personnel inspect the trails to identify where the groomers should focus and to report on trail conditions.
- Trail conditions vary depending on the weather.
- Grooming begins when the ground becomes frozen and more snow is received.
- Only a limited number of trails will be groomed by the Forest Service and local snowmobile clubs.
