Winter Sports

View of Unaka Mountain covered with snow in Cherokee National Forest

It is rare, but when snow falls in the Southern Appalachian Mountains it creates beautiful scenery and new opportunities for outdoor recreation.

There are no developed winter recreation facilities or trails in the Cherokee National Forest.  However, roads that are temporarily gated in the winter offer some opportunities for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.

The Roan Mountain Zone on the Tennessee and North Carolina state line offers the most consistent opportunities each year with limited parking is available at Carvers Gap.
