Viewing Plants

Growing season on the Grasslands spans from May through September, providing an opportunity to see the vast prairie dressed in its finest.  The mixed-grass prairie, cottonwood riparian, and woody draws characteristic of the Northern Great Plains creates a welcoming site for plant enthusiasts.  The prairies of the Sheyenne National Grassland offers a wide variety of  tall grass prairie species.

Many wildflowers bloom throughout the summer months such as wild crocus, phlox, penstemon, prairie wallflower, scarlet globemallow, soapweed and sunflower.  Important native grasses found growing here include needle and thread, western wheatgrass, blue gamma, big and little bluestem and threadleaf sedge.
