Viewing Scenery
If you want to take in the big views from the comfort of a vehicle, our forest has many miles of scenic byways and travel corridors including the Grand Mesa Byway, sections of the San Juan Skyway, the Alpine Loop, Unaweep, Silverthread, and West Elk Loop, just to name a few.
Fall colors are vibrant from mid-September and ocassionally into the early part of October. This is one of the most popular times for travel along our scenic byways. Check out the Grand Mesa Visitor Center for scheduled Color Sunday events during the the last weekend of September.
For those of you more interested in a slower, and closer look, the GMUG offers over 3,500 miles of trails available for hiking, and horseback riding. Many of these trails are also open for mountain bikes, motorcycles and ATVs. Please refer to the MVUMs and visitor use maps to find a trail appropriate for your mode of travel.
