Lake and Pond Fishing

Inland lakes offer fishing for bass, pike, walleye, panfish and trout.

The Hiawatha National Forest offers fishing on more than 75 lakes for a wide variety of warmwater and coldwater species.

Our "Fishing on Inland Lakes" document offers information on the Hiawatha's west side lakes. This guide presents information on lakes that have public access and usually offer an attrative sport fishery for one or more of the lakes species.

These activities are regulated by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR Navigating away from USFS webpage). The Michigan Fishing Guide is available wherever fishing licenses are sold.

Lake and Pond Fishing Areas

East Zone
The East Unit of the Hiawatha National Forest is located in the east side of the Upper Peninsula, bordering three of the Great Lakes:
- Lake Superior
- Lake Michigan
- Lake Huron
The eastern portion stretches north from the town of St. Ignace, which lies along Lakes Michigan and Huron, to the shore of Lake Superior west of the city of Sault Ste. Marie.
Sault Sainte Marie Ranger District
Sault Ste Marie Ranger district is located on the upper half of the east side of the forest.
Bay View Campground
Monocle Lake Campground
Monocle Lake Campground's location off of Monocle Lake and its proximity to so many recreational opportunities in the Sault Ste. Marie area makes it the perfect home-base as you go adventuring through the Upper Peninsula Michigan. Don't forget to add the Whitefish Bay National Forest Scenic Byway to the list. It runs along Lake Superior all the way to Tahquamenon Falls.

Monocle Lake offers a quiet, relaxing place to fish, swim, hike, and just enjoy the outdoors while camped along the shores of a lovely inland lake. You will definitely want to add Monocle Lake to your Upper Michigan Fall color tour! Make a reservation, or view a map of the Monocle Lake Campground.

Monocle Lake Accessibility
- Sites have hardened surfaces and tent pads to accommodate accessibility needs.
- Accessible tables, fire rings, and lantern posts are available at each site.
- Accessible pressurized water and pit toilets are conveniently spaced throughout the recreation area.

The St. Ignace Ranger District is located on the lower half of the east side of the Forest (southeastern portion of the Upper Peninsula).

West Zone
The West Unit is located in the central of the Upper Peninsula, bordering two of the Great Lakes - Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. The western portion of the Hiawatha extends from the towns of Rapid River and Manistique, along Lake Michigan, to the town of Munising on the Lake Superior shore.
