• Big Quilcene area

  A true vision of a Pacific Northwest Forest, the Big Quilcene area is home to big trees, rushing rivers and rolling fog lines. With a multitude of hiking opportunities, the trails in the Big Quilcene area offer something for novice and experienced hikers alike. On its lower slopes, this area is known for its bountiful mushrooms and year-long greenery of moss and evergreen trees, while at its highest elevations within the Buckhorn Wilderness, this area includes steep terrain, barren ridges, rocky cliffs and sharp peaks.

  A quiet forested hike within Buckhorn Wilderness. Beautiful vistas of The Brothers and Hood Canal from the top of the ridge. Trail is 4.1 miles to Harrison Lake and 4.7 miles to the ridgetop.

  The trail follows South Fork Tunnel Creek for three miles through old-growth forest. Tunnel Creek Shelter is at 2.7 miles. After 3 miles the trail climbs steadily to Harrison Lake and then to the crest of the ridge. Continue for a very steep descent to Dosewallips River Road for a one way trip of  7.9 miles.

  Explore the range of ecosystems within the Dosewallips River Basin as this low elevation area gradually climbs to the ridges of the Olympics. Beginning in the low, wet temperate forest that meets the open Hood Canal, this area transitions to subalpine forests of fir and western white pine and eventually gives way to alpine meadows at its highest elevations. Seal Rock Campground along Hood Canal offers boating and fishing access and nearby Mt. Walker provides accessible views of the Olympic and Cascade peaks.

• Elbo Creek Trail

  This moderate 2.5 mile forested trail ascends through to the top of a storm blow down with nice views. Some difficult sections. A great place to observe a variety of plant life in the late spring and summer.

  This one mile second-growth forest canyon trail leads to Big Quilcene River among spring blooming rhododendrons, lilies, and honeysuckle. 

  The short Falls View Loop Trail is adjacent to Falls View Canyon Trail and leads to a view of the cascading waterfall into the Big Quilcene River. A small picnic area with four sites is near the waterfall overlook. Continue on the Falls View Canyon Trail into the lush canyon alongside the rushing Big Quilcene River. You will loop back around to make your return to the trailhead. This trail makes a nice walk from the Falls View Campground or a rejuvinating break from the road.

  A 2 mile steep, forested hike through Douglas-fir, spring blooming pacific rhododendrons, salal, and Oregon Grape to the north summit of Mt. Walker. Grades up to 25%. Walk the road at the top for .5 miles to reach the south viewpoint.

  Mt. Walker is the only peak facing Puget Sound that has both a road and trail to its summit. The trail is easily accessed year-round, though the summit road is subject to seasonal closure.

  Experience the dramatic change in elevation within the Duckabush watershed that give way to expansive views and a multitude of forest types. This area starts at 699 feet near the Dosewallips River and soars to the 6,866 foot summit of The Brothers peak. The lower slopes are dominated by Western hemlock, Douglas-fir and western red cedar which transition to Pacific silver fir and mountain hemlock before giving way to subalpine fir, mountain meadows and rock outcrops. Visit the historic Interrorem Cabin built in 1907 as the first administrative site of the Olympic National Forest.

• Duckabush Trail #803

  This trail follows the Duckabush River into The Brothers Wilderness and enters Olympic National Park at 6.7 miles.

  The trail enters a burned area at around the two mile mark and continues beyond Five-Mile Camp, the origin of the 2011 fire. Use caution when traveling and camping within the burned area, as there are many dead standing trees and unstable surfaces as a result of the fire.

  The trail is an easy grade for 2.4 miles and becomes more difficult while climbing over Big Hump. The trail over Big Hump is steep and the tread is loose rock. The grade becomes moderate again west of Big Hump all the way to the Park boundary. There are numerous camps along the trail.  There is a scenic place to rest near the river at 2.4 miles after Little Hump. The most popular camping and fishing area is at 5 mile Camp.

  This 7.2 mile trail begins in second growth forest and rhododendrons with brief glimpses of Duckabush valley and Mt. Jupiter. Once past The Brothers Wilderness boundary at 5.5 miles, trees thin out and ridge top provides fantastic views of The Brothers and Puget Sound. Grades are moderate to steep.

  This trail switchbacks steeply to the ridge, then gradually follows the ridgeline to the Wilderness boundary where the tread becomes rough and steep. Beyond the Wilderness boundary are views of Mt. Constance, The Brothers, Hood Canal and Jupiter Lakes. There are panoramic views of the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound from the summit of Mt Jupiter. The best views of Mt. Rainier, Adams, and St. Helens are seen on the return hike. Note: Routes to Jupiter Lakes are not formally established and hikers must scramble down from the ridge 900 feet in elevation to the lakes.

• Mt. Jupiter Trailhead
• Murhut Falls Trail #828

  This 0.8 mile trail goes through second growth to old growth forest around Murhut Falls. In the spring rhododendrons flower along the short trail. 

  This trail is maintained only during the summer months. The trail is a moderate grade but stay on the trail, as hazards exist off the trail. View the falls from the top of the bank at the falls. Peek-a-boo views of Mt. Jupiter and Jupiter Ridge. Good place for camera shots of the high, picturesque Murhut Falls.

  Nestled in the northeastern corner of the Olympic Peninsula, the Dungeness area is formed by the Gray Wolf and Dungeness River basins up to the rocky heights of the Buckhorn Wilderness. Being the driest area of the Olympic forest, it is known for its subalpine flower blooms and numerous butterfly species. This area provides access to a vast network of trails along rivers, Wilderness areas and connects into popular National Park trails.

  This trail travels through dense hardwoods and conifers along the Gray Wolf River. Trail is 4.2 miles to the former bridge site and end of trail. This scenic canyon contains spring blooming native rhododendrons. This section of the Gray Wolf Grades up to 15%.  This trail offers access to fishing areas along the Gray Wolf River. This trail enters Buckhorn Wilderness. 

  To access Upper Gray Wolf Trail 834.2 and Olympic National Park start at Slab Camp Trail #838 and travel to the bridge over the Gray Wolf River.

  This is a short steep day hike, with benches placed along the trail. Many opportunities to view rhododendrons from mid-May to early June. Trail does enter the northern boundary of the Buckhorn Wilderness.

  Partial views of mountains to the west include Blue Mountain, Baldy, Tyler and Maynard Peaks. Overgrown trees at the top with old fire lookout that was used in the 1930’s. Please stay off the lookout structure.

  This trail shares a trailhead with the accessible interpretive Interrorem Trail #804 which forms a loop. Ranger Hole Trail leads 0.8 miles down to the Duckabush River and the historic fishing spot of the first ranger stationed at Interrorem Cabin. 

  This trail goes through an area of large second growth timber, and then drops steeply to the loudly sounding river below. The trail follows the river for a short way to a bluff that overlooks a deep pool. Above the pool the water churns in white rapids as it rushes through a narrow rock passage, cascading down to the "Ranger Hole," so named because Forest Rangers who used to live at Interrorem Cabin fished there.

  This is a 0.5 mile spur trail in the Three O'Clock Ridge area that ends at its junction with the Lower Dungeness Trail #833.3. The trail is a steep ascent for the majority of its length. The trailhead is not currently signed and minimum parking is available.

  This 8.6 mile trail within Buckhorn Wilderness travels through conifer forest to a historic mine site. Remnants of historic Tubal Cain copper and manganese mine are visible on this trail. You can take a side spur trail up the Tull Canyon Trail to the site of a 1952 B-17 crash site. Continuing on the original trail cross a creek and switchback up alpine meadows to Buckhorn Lake. Continue past the lake, to Marmot Pass for ridge line views and mountain scenery.

  At Marmot Pass there are junctions with Upper Dungeness Trail #833.2 and Upper Big Quilcene Trail #833.

  This 8.1 mile trail makes its way along the picturesque Dungeness River for 3.2 miles to Camp Handy then climbs steadily to an intersection with Home Lake and Marmot Pass trails within Buckhorn Wilderness. Grade is 10-15% with some grades to 20%. This trail also connects with the Royal Basin (Olympic National Park) and Tubal Cain Trail.

  Boil all water taken from streams before drinking. Please pack out what you pack in.

• Upper Dungeness Trailhead

  Spanning the inland northwest portion of the peninsula near Forks, WA this area is enclosed by the Pacific Ocean to the West, the Strait of Juan De Fuca to the North, and the immense forests of the Olympics to the East. The diversity of ecosystems in the Forks area provides a multitude of recreation opportunities including access to the Sol Duc, Bogachiel and North Fork Calawah Rivers. The Bogachiel River Trail leads through rainforest in the Bogachiel River valley into the Olympic National Park.

  This 7 mile trail starts from Kloshe Nanitch trailhead at West Snider Road near milepost 211 on highway 101. It begins with a mile of gentle grade up to the first stream crossing,  then climbs 3,145 feet turning into moderate then difficult grades with rock outcrops, a variety of plant life, and some impressive views. The trail accesses Kloshe Nanitch Viewpoint at 3.5 miles. At 7 miles it links the west side of the Sol Duc Valley via Snider Ridge to Mt. Muller Loop Trail.

  From the lush temperate forest valley, the trail climbs up to a transition with the high elevation Silver Fir Zone. There are an especially wide spectrum of plant species within these two vegetation zones. Perched at the end of the trail on a rock outcrop, Kloshe Nanitch Lookout observation area provides spectacular views of the Sol Duc Valley, Mt. Olympus and Lake Crescent.

  Caution: Watch children when near rock outcrops and cliffs. Flower meadows are very fragile. Please stay on the trail!

• Mt. Muller Trail #882

  The 12.8 mile loop trail has a few 20% grades with some exposed rock outcrops. Horses and mountain bikers should be in good condition before attempting the loop. The south end of the trail provides gentle grades. A quarter mile of the southeast corner of the trail is a shared route with the Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT).    

  From a lush temperate forest valley, the trail climbs 2,200 feet in three miles to Snider Ridge. It weaves four miles through Douglas-fir trees on the north side of the ridge and rocky points and high meadows to the south. The trail meanders along the ridge top between Jim’s Junction and Mosley gap. It offers spectacular views of Mt. Olympus, Lake Crescent, the Straits of Juan de Fuca, and the Sol Duc Valley below. The trail descends to the valley floor through boulder formations and overhanging moss. The loop trail returns to the trailhead through beautiful stands of maple, Douglas-fir and western hemlock. The flower meadows are very fragile. Please stay on the trail. 

  Tether stock in designated areas only or in the trees below the meadows. This is a multi-use trail for mountain biking, horseback-riding and hiking. Horses have the right of way. Carry adequate drinking water and be prepared for bad weather. Practice Leave No Trace techniques during your trip.

• Pioneer's Path Nature Trail #884

  This easy accessible 0.3 mile interpretive trail loop borders the Sol Duc River through second growth stands of hemlock and fir. Interpretive signs depict how some early pioneers lived off the land. This trail is within Klahowya Campground.

  The trail provides access to a beautiful stand of western hemlock, Sitka spruce, Douglas-fir and bigleaf and vine maples. The lush understory of rain forest vegetation includes a variety of ferns, wood sorrel and mosses. There is an overlook of the river where a short section of trail parallels the Sol Duc River.

• Snider Jackson Trail #883

  Trail begins at Forest Service Road 29-070 and continues to the Olympic National Park Boundary.

• Hamma Hamma area

  The Hamma Hamma drainage is well-loved by locals and visitors alike. This area encompasses an array of recreation opportunities including the challenging trails ascending into Mount Skokomish and The Brothers Wilderness, as well as family friendly trails, two developed campgrounds, and one historic cabin. The area surrounding the Hamma Hamma drainage is comprised of several bioregions including alpine lakes, meadows, old growth forest, rocky mountain outcrops, and post-fire regenerative forests.

• Elk Lake Trail #805

  This 1.5 mile trail has both old and second growth forests and views of Jefferson Creek Drainage area. Opportunities for fishing and nature viewing at Elk Lake.

  Left Fork to Cedar Creek (from the -012 spur): Follow the trail for a short distance to a junction, go left and the trail leads to the south shore of Elk Lake, through old growth forest to Cedar Creek, where the trail comes up to Forest Road 2401. There are several campsites along the lake in this area. For a loop hike, continue along the Forest Road #2401 to the north branch of trail and return to the lower trailhead.

  North Branch of Trail: Hike for a short distance to a junction, go right and cross Jefferson Creek, this will lead to the North Branch of the Elk Lake Trail.

  Right fork of North Branch Trail: This fork goes through a second growth stand of timber and older stands of Douglas-fir, Hemlock, and Pacific madrone. This portion of trail meets Fores Service Road #2421 (Jefferson Ridge Road).

  Left fork of North Branch Trail: The left fork travels along the edge of Elk Lake and through old growth forest and ends 0.7 miles at Forest Service Road #2401.

  This 0.5 mile trail travels to Jefferson Lake, a peaceful lake that was formed during an ancient earthquake that created a rock dam at the outlet. Wildlife viewing and fishing are popular activities at this lake.

  This 1.6 mile trail leads to the top of the ridge through a second growth forest of Douglas-fir. The trail starts in a second growth forest, and meanders in and out of the timber along the edge of a logged area that is covered with rhododendrons and bear grass.  At ½ mile, the trail crosses the 2421 road, and then steeply climbs up the hillside until it reaches the ridge. Views into the Hamma Hamma River Drainage are spectacular. The trail then follows along ridgeline until it reaches the site where the Jefferson Ridge fire lookout tower formerly stood. 

  There are scenic views of the surrounding mountains: Mt. Washington and Mt. Pershing; the Sawtooth Range consisting of Mt. Cruiser, Mt. Skokomish and Mt. Stone; The Brothers, and in a gap between Lena and The Brothers, a rounded peak with a snowfield - Mt. Deception and a steep peak – Mt. Mystery. 

• Jefferson Ridge Trailhead
• Lena Lake Trail #810

  The popular 3.6 mile trail to Lena Lake and Lena Lake Campground is well maintained and is a moderate grade with long switchbacks. Please stay on the trail. Cutting switchbacks will save only seconds, while the destroyed vegetation will take years to recover. This trail is heavily used during the summer months. Beyond Lower Lena Lake, the trails are much steeper and receive less maintenance.

  Enjoy a setting of forested second growth to old growth forest and beautiful 55-acre lake. Please follow Leave No Trace practices.

• Lena Lake/Brothers Trailhead
• Living Legacy Interpretive Trail

  The Living Legacy Interpretive trail is a 1.5 mile loop. The first 1/4 mile is accessible and travels along the Hamma Hamma River. Features of this section of the trail include views of the river and benches overlooking the river.

  It begins at Hamma Hamma Campground east bulletin board where there is parking for day use. The trail follows the Hamma Hamma River and then climbs up through teh mossy woods to a viewpoint of the historic Hamma Hamma Cabin. There are interpretive signs along the trail that explain some of the history of the area. From the Hamma Hamma Cabin the trail loops back down to the campground where it ends. Walk a short distance through the campground back to the day use area.

• Mildred Lakes Trail #822

  This way trail within Mount Skokomish Wilderness is a path established by hikers and fishermen over the years. It is not maintained. It is well established to Huckleberry Creek, but beyond this point it becomes steep and difficult to follow. 

  The elevation gain on this trail is deceiving as it climbs up steeply, then down, then up again and then down to the lakes. Because of the primitive characteristics of this trail, it is strongly recommended that boots with high tops be worn when hiking this trail.

  This trail enters Mount Skokomish Wilderness and after 3 miles enters Olympic National Park. The trail is very steep and difficult in places. There are a few campsites scattered along the trail. Once Lake of the Angels is reached, one can find numerous way-trails and paths leading in many different directions.

• Lake Cushman Area

  This area gets its namesake from the stunning Lake Cushman Reservoir, a popular destination for its clear waters and lush forested shoreline. Extremely popular for swimming, fishing, boating and picnicking during sunny weekends, this area also provides ample opportunities to climb steep trails reaching rocky alpine peaks within the Mount Skokomish Wilderness. Camp in the family friendly Big Creek Campground or use one of the many day-use sites surrounding the lake.

  The northern end of the Lake Cushman Corridor (FS-24) is the gateway to the Staircase entrance of Olympic National Park.

   

  IMPORTANT NOTICE:

  The possession of alcohol is prohibited along the Lake Cushman Corridor (FS-24 and FS-2451).

  Visitors should be aware that this area receives extremely high, weather dependent visitation. If visiting the Lake Cushman area be prepared for heavy traffic with no opportunities for turnarounds until reaching the Staircase entrance of Olympic National Park. Parking is only allowed in designated areas. If no parking options are available be prepared with an alternative plan to visit another area.

  When recreating along the Lake Cushman Corridor be considerate of other users and be a steward public lands. This includes removing any personal trash or debris to leave the area clean and ready for other visitors to enjoy.   This 1.1 mile trail climbs at a gentle grade through mature fir and hemlock forest. The elevation is comparatively high, yet the firs are 3 feet or more in diameter, with an open understory.

  This trail is in Mt. Skokomish Wilderness and travels through a quiet, old growth forest. Peek-a-boo views of Lake Cushman, Prospect Ridge, Dow Mountain, and Lightning Peak may be seen on the ascent. From the ridge loop trail, you can catch views of Bear Gulch Valley, Mt. Ellinor, Mt. Washington, Mt. Pershing, and the distant Huckleberry drainage may be seen.

  This trail has been adopted by a dedicated volunteer group and receives maintenance year round.

  The trail is extremely steep and is very hard on the legs coming down. Use caution. Ice axe (when snow is present), good hiking boots and the ten essentials are highly recommended. The ridge route is marked with orange diamonds to help with route finding in winter conditions.

  Explore remnants of long-ago fires, second and old growth forest, and the meandering creek beds of the Mt. Zion area. Located in the northeastern corner of the Olympic Peninsula, this area is known for its robust blooms of rhododendron in the spring, and its lower elevation trail system along the initial slopes of the Olympics. With several trails open to stock and mountain biking, this area provides a range of recreation opportunities.

  Veiled by a canopy of ancient Sitka spruce, Douglas fir, western red cedar, and western hemlocks this area showcases the ancient temperate rainforest of the Olympic Peninsula. Home to the historic Lake Quinault Lodge, various campgrounds, and a vast network of trails spanning Quinault National Recreational Trail System, Colonel Bob Wilderness and the West Fork Humptulips River, the Quinault area provides a wide array of recreation opportunities for all.   This 2 mile primitive trail leads into a deep canyon in Colonel Bob Wilderness from SOuth Shore Road. At 2 miles the trail opens into a small clearing along Fletcher Creek. Trail peters out toward the end.

  This difficult trail leads into beautiful temperate rain forest within Colonel Bob Wilderness. Towering conifers including Sitka spruce, Douglas-fir, western hemlock and western red cedar provide dense shade for this trail. 

  The trail gains over 1800 feet in 2.4 miles where it junctions with the Colonel Bob Trail #851 which leads to the summit of Colonel Bob in an additional 1.8 miles.

  The Quinault Loop, locally known as the Rain Forest Nature Trail or 4 mile loop, has no beginning or ending point. Dense old-growth conifer forest with lush understory of rain forest vegetation. Excellent opportunity to view the Olympic temperate rain forest and Quinault Lake. 1.3 miles along the south shore of Quinault Lake and 2.7 miles are through the temperate rain forest. Points of interest include Cascade Falls, Cedar Bog, and interpretive Quinault Rain Forest Nature Trail.

• West Fork Humptulips Trail #806

  The entire West Fork Trail #806 is about 17 miles in length. Trail grades are generally 0-10% with a few grades of up to 20%. This trail follows the river within a remote valley defined by the heights of Colonel Bob Wilderness to the west and Stovepipe and Moonlight Dome peaks to the east. The trail fords the river multiple times and winds along the western edge of Moonlight Dome Roadless Area.  Alert! Hikers should use extreme caution when crossing the West Fork Humptulips River as there are no footbridges.

  Lower West Fork Humptulips Trail #806 runs 7.9 miles from Gorge Bridge Trailhead to it's junction with Lower Pete’s Creek Trail #858.1 which provides access to Colonel Bob Wilderness via Pete's Creek Trail #858. The trail follows the picturesque West Fork of the Humptulips River through dense old growth forest and open glades along the river corridor.

  Upper West Fork Humptulips Trail #806 runs about 9 miles from it's junction with Lower Pete's Creek Trail #858 northeast to Cambell Tree Grove. Then it climbs through dense old growth forest before crossing Forest Service Road 2204 and reaching Humpnoochee Pass.

  Spanning the southeast corner of the Olympic Peninsula, the picturesque Skokomish River Watershed is a favorite among horseback riders, mountain bikers and hikers alike. Over 15 miles of trail paralleling the South Fork of the Skokomish River gently rises through old growth forests and multiple stream beds. Well-loved by horseback riders, the Skokomish area is home to Lebar Horse Camp, one of two “stock friendly” campgrounds in the Forest as well as a network of trails open to stock.

  Trail leads through old growth forest paralleling the South Fork Skokomish River. Good trail for mountain bikes, horses, and fishing in the nearby river. Points of interest include the old LeBar Claim, Church Creek Shelter and Harps Shelter. This trail is gradual to moderate and travels 10.3 miles to the Skokomish Upper South Fork Trailhead.

  The Wynoochee area is a remote getaway in the southern area of the Olympic Peninsula. Steep, rugged peaks frame the lush conifer and hardwood forested shores of Wynoochee Lake. This area provides ample opportunity for swimming, boating, and fishing, as well as an extensive trail system surrounding the entire lake.

  The Working Forest Nature Trail is a ½ mile trail located on the north side of the Coho Campground off the Wynoochee Lake Shore Trail.

  Visitors here can enjoy exhibits at the vista overlook and a view of the river gorge located just below the dam. Tacoma Power has a Fish Collection Facility a few miles below the dam on the river.

  This trail is a short 0.3 mile trail that descends steeply to the creek near the base of the waterfall. The hike setting provides a small stream and waterfall in old growth and second growth conifer forests.

  Small streams and waterfalls, Wynoochee River, Wynoochee Lake, old-growth and second growth forests are all part of the experience along this 16 mile loop trail. The trail follows 6 miles along the lakeshore, extends another 2 miles upriver to a bridge over the Wynoochee River, then returns to the Coho campground in 8 miles on the opposite side of the river/lake.
