• Beckwourth Ranger District

  Beckwourth Ranger District is one of three ranger districts of the Plumas National Forest. We are located on the eastern portion of the forest in Eastern Plumas County extending into Northeastern Sierra and South Lassen Counties. We are proud to be part of a dynamic community that shares its wealth of resources with our visitors.

  The Beckwourth Ranger District is a place where visitors can find activities and experiences they require. Besides the great expanse of forest and range land, visitors also enjoy three recreation areas; mountain top forest lookouts; many campgrounds; a versatile forest road system; four lodges operated under permit; and two rental facilities. From solitude to adventure, available activities include lodges, camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, equestrian, nature watching, water sports, cultural resources, exploring, wildflowers, fall color, motor touring and relaxing.

  In addition to recreation activities, Beckwourth Ranger District provides other benefits to the community. Fuelwood, Christmas Trees and other timber related resource are available by permit.  All commercial permits must be obtained in person.  Small amounts of forest products are available without permit.   Located in the headwaters of the Feather River, Frenchman Lake is only 38 miles northwest of Reno, NV, and 26 miles northeast of Portola, CA. The California Department of Water resources created the lake in 1962 by damming Little Last Chance Creek. A shoreline 21 miles long ends at the 129-foot tall earthen dam, which rises to an elevation of 5,607 feet. During summer, this recreation area offers a variety of outdoor experiences, including: camping, hiking, biking, picnicking, fishing, swimming, boating, water-skiing, jet-skiing and hunting. Winter activities range from snowmobiling to ice fishing and cross-country skiing.

  There are five campgrounds, two picnic areas, several fishing accesses and two boat ramps with seasonal docks. An RV waste disposal site is located near the Cottonwood Springs Campground.

  Lake Davis is located 7 miles north of Portola, California. This lake was created in 1967 for recreational opportunities. The Lake Davis Recreation Area offers a wide variety of summer outdoor experiences including: camping , picnicking,  fishing, hunting, boating, mountain biking, swimming, and wildlife viewing. Waterskiing and jet skis are not permitted. Frequent strong winds can cause the lake to become very hazardous for small craft.  In the winter, ice fishing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing are popular activities.

  Located nine miles southwest of Graeagle, California, this recreation area has special geological features. There is breathtaking scenery and over 20 small lakes nearby, most of which are accessible by hiking trails. This area provides a multitude of recreational activities including camping, fishing, boating, hunting, mountain biking, horseback riding, picnicking, hiking, backpacking, swimming, windsurfing and nature study. In the winter visitors can snowmobile, cross-country ski and snowshoe.

• Little Grass Valley Recreation Area

  8-3-2021  At this time the Black Rock boat dock has been removed from the water and is not available until further notice.

  The Feather River Ranger District manages 8 family campgrounds around Little Grass Valley Reservoir. There are approximately 323 camping units. Campsites in Red Feather, Running Deer, Little Beaver parts of Loop A & B and the southern half of Wyandotte, and Horse Camp may be reserved through www.recreation.gov (1-877-444-6777) All other campgrounds are available on a first-come, first server basis.

  Each campground has piped water. Trailer sites are available, as well as walk-in tent campsites. Trailers of up to 40 feet can be accommodated in some of the camping units. No hookups are provided. There are 2 RV dump stations, one near Tooms Boat Launch, and one near Red Feather.  Facilities are usually open from Memorial Day to October.

  Little Grass Valley Recreation Area offers opportunities for many more recreation experiences for visitors. Three boat launch ramps provide access to the water for fishing, water-skiing, sailing, or simply touring on boats. There is a wheel chair accessible fishing ramp by at the dam. Two swim beaches provide excellent swimming and picnicking opportunities. The Lakeshore Trail (13 miles) winds around the entire lake, open for horseback riding, mountain bike riding and hiking. Visitors may also enjoy watching wildlife, campfire programs, or exploring nearby historic gold mining towns.

  There are several wonderful campgrounds along the Middle Fork of the Feather River below Little Grass Valley Recreation Area. Activities include nature viewing, stream fishing, hiking biking equestrian, OHV riding and hunting.

  Sly Creek Campground has 25 units. Campground has drinking water, rest rooms,and garbage service. Each camping unit has a table and a fire ring.Trailers up to 22 feet can be accommodated, however no hookups are provided. Maximum stay is 14 days.  Sly Creek Reservoir usually opens around May 4 through October. Boat ramp open.

  The Mt. Hough Ranger District is a place where visitors can find activities and experiences they require. Besides the great expanse of forest, visitors also enjoy varied recreation areas; mountain top forest lookouts; both developed fee and no-fee campgrounds; a versatile forest road system; privately owned lodges operated under permit; and various boat launches. From solitude to adventure, available activities include lodges, camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, equestrian, nature watching, water sports, cultural resources, exploring, wildflowers, fall color, motor touring and relaxing. 

  In addition to recreation activities, Mt. Hough Ranger District provides other benefits to the community. Fuelwood, Christmas Trees and other timber related resource are available by permit. Personal use fuelwood and Christmas Tree permits are available by mail or in person.   At 5,000 feet in elevation, Antelope Lake is located in the northeastern part of the Mt. Hough Ranger District. It is a small remote lake with 15 miles of shoreline. Surrounding the lake are mountains blanketed with pine and fir trees. Protected coves around the lake attract several species of migratory birds.

  Travellers can also stop in nearby communities such as Taylorsville, Greenville, Janesville, Milford and Susanville for ice and other supplies before you travel up the hill.   Wood is for sale within campgrounds.

  Bucks Lake is located on Oroville-Bucks Lake Road, 17 miles southwest of Quincy or 32 miles northeast of Oroville.  Bucks Lake is a high mountain lake surrounded by the Bucks Lake Wilderness on one side and recreation residences/resorts on the other side.   The area offers year-round recreation opportunities, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

  Showers are available nearby at Sandy Point Day Use / Boat Launch.

  Located 32 miles west of Quincy on Hwy 70, the Feather River Canyon Area has multiple campgrounds and trails.  Located on the west branch of the north fork of the Feather River along Caribou Road, the area offers canoeing, kayaking, rafting and berry picking in late summer.  Gansner Bar, North Fork, and Queen Lily campgrounds are located just off Caribou Road with Hallstead nearby on Hwy 70 just 17 miles west of Quincy. 

  Supplies are available in Belden, Twain, and Quincy.

  Just north of Quincy in Plumas County, the Indian Valley includes fishing, hiking, swimming, picnicking and camping in the Plumas National Forest.  This portion of Highway 89, just north of Quincy connects two major scenic highway routes.  Plumas County's "Scenic Byway Link" travels through the quiet, historic communities of Canyon Dam, Greenville, Crescent Mills, and Taylorsville and is a connection between "Feather River National Scenic Byway" on Hwy 70, just north of Quincy and the “Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway", which begins at the northern boundary of the Plumas National Forest.  This route makes for great scenic driving throughout the year, but is widely known for its spectacular full fall splendor.  Also located in the Indian Valley is the Round Valley Reservoir located three miles above Greenville, which is a warm water fishery containing bass and bluegill.  It’s a popular place for fishing and picnicking, and is nearby to the Greenville Campground.  The area is also great for bicycling.
