  • Forest Service Opens Lake Chinnabee Recreation Area for Day Use Only

Visitors to Lake Chinnabee Recreation Area will notice changes when the recreation site and all hiking trails re-open on March 1.   The area has been closed to the public since May 18, 2013, after a flash flood event stranded 20 campers and caused significant damage. After careful analysis that involved public input, the Forest Service decided to eliminate camping and change the recreation at Lake Chinnabee to day-use only.

“By converting the area to day use, visitors can still enjoy this popular location,” said Gloria Nielsen, district ranger on the Talladega District “We believe visitors are more alert to changing weather patterns during the day and able to react more quickly and safely during the day should a flood event occur.”
