Black Fire road alert

Approximately 163 miles of National Forest System Roads exist within the Black Fire perimeter. Many of these roads and others across the forest have repeatedly been made impassable by flood waters during a stronger than normal monsoon season.

The Forest has received reports of visitors and their trucks being stuck in forest areas for multiple days at a time due to impassable road conditions. Forest Road 226 out of Chloride, Poverty Creek, and Beaverhead areas are reported to be especially problematic for visitors.

With limited road crew resources and a vast area of roads needing repair, the Gila National Forest road crew is inspecting and completing basic repairs on numerous roads, developing road base, and prioritizing longer-term restoration. Visitors should exercise caution when visiting forest areas impacted by fire and/or flooding, and consider using other forest areas not affected by the Black Fire.
