The emerald ash borer, an exotic beetle, has already killed more than 50 million ash trees in the northern United States, has been detected in forests in Missouri. Within the boundaries of the Mark Twain National Forest, it has even been found in Madison County and Wayne County. Federal and state quarantines restrict movement of any ash wood product, including hardwood firewood, which is the most common way emerald ash borer is spread.
If you purchase or bring firewood into any Recreation Area, do not take it out of the Recreation Area. Once it is brought into Madison County or Wayne County, it should be considered quarantined and must not leave the county.
All firewood brought in any recreation area should be burned before you leave. Do not leave it for other campers.
