  • Croatan planning 2 prescribed burns on Saturday, March 10

The Croatan National Forest is planning to conduct two prescribed burns today, Saturday, March 10.

The first burn will cover 400 acres in an area 15 miles south of the District Office and 2 miles south of Newport in Carteret County. The second burn is 278 acres at the District Office, 7 miles south of New Bern in Craven County.

The public should be aware of the potential for smoke in the area along with firefighter traffic. A helicopter will be used. Consideration for firefighter and public safety is the highest priority.

The goal of the burn is to reduce the amount of fuel on the forest floor to prevent future catastrophic wildfires. The burn will also help improve wildlife habitat.
