  • Trails in McDowell County Damaged from Heavy Rainfall

Significant rainfall caused landslides and washouts on some of the highly-visited Forest Service trails near Old Fort in McDowell County, on the Pisgah National Forest’s Grandfather Ranger District. The following trails were impacted:

    • The Kitsuma Trail has a landslide on the lower portion of the trail, near the Old Fort Picnic Area.
    • The Point Lookout Trail has multiple landslides along lower half of the trail.
    • The Catawba Falls Trail has multiple small landslides along the trail and a portion of the old dam has washed out.

Jarrett Creek Road (FSRD 4030), which is currently closed to vehicles but open to recreation use, has a large landslide east of Salt Gap.

In addition to the impacts listed here, many trails and roads may have trees down and minor washouts. Please use caution if visiting the area this weekend.
