  • Tusquitee Ranger District planning a prescribed burn March 18

The U.S. Forest Service plans to conduct a prescribed burn on Hiwassee Lake on the Nantahala National Forest today, March 18, weather permitting.

The 446-acre burn will occur on the Tusquitee Ranger District in the Beech Creek area of Cherokee County, weather permitting.

Some smoke may be visible near Murphy and Great Creek. All prescribed burns follow smoke management guidelines to reduce impacts to the public.

The goal of this understory burn is to reduce hazardous fuels on the forest floor to prevent future catastrophic wildfires and improve wildlife habitat.

Public and firefighter safety is the highest priority. Be aware of the potential for firefighter traffic near the burn areas.
