  • Nantahala Ranger District plans two-day prescribed burn starting April 23

The U.S. Forest Service plans to conduct a two-day prescribed burn on the Nantahala Ranger District starting today, April 23, weather permitting.

The 2,094-acre burn is near the Nantahala community in Macon County. Some smoke also may be visible near Franklin and Sylva. All prescribed burns follow smoke management guidelines to reduce impacts to the public. The Bartram Trail will be closed from the Appletree Trailhead to the Duke Power Trailhead in the Nantahala Gorge for the duration of the burn. The trail is expected to reopen on Thursday, April 25.

The goal of this understory burn is to reduce hazardous fuels on the forest floor to prevent future catastrophic wildfires and improve the oak-hickory ecosystem and wildlife habitat.

Public and firefighter safety is the highest priority. Be aware of the potential for firefighter traffic near the burn areas.
