The National Forests in North Carolina will continue controlled burn operations today in the Croatan and Uwharrie National Forests. Burn operations may continue through the end of the week as long as weather and fuel conditions remain favorable for safe, effective burns. The goals for the burns are to reduce potential wildfire fuels that have built up on the forest floor and improve forest health by supporting native, fire-adapted species. Details about each burn unit are included below:
Croatan National Forest
– 561 acres in Carteret County located off Nine Mile Road and Millis Swamp Road near the community of Newport, 14 miles south of the district office.
– 499 acres in Carteret County located off highway 70, Hibbs Road, and Shaver Road near the community of Newport, 15 miles south of the district office.
Uwharrie National Forest
– 367 acres in Montgomery County located on Moccasin Creek Road and Wolf Den.
Helicopters will be utilized to assist during the burns. No drone/UAV use is permitted during burn operations. Please remember, if you fly, we can't.
We ask that anyone near the burn units pay attention to posted signs and watch carefully for wildland firefighters and personnel working in the area. We will monitor wind speed and direction to try and limit smoke impacts on nearby communities, but please be aware of any smoke in the area.
