Closures on Francis Marion Nat'l Forest (Wambaw Trail, Litchfield/Lottie bridges
Closure
Date(s): Aug 21, 2024
Assessments were conducted following Tropical Storm Debby by the Francis Marion Ranger District office, requiring an indefinite closure of the Wambaw Cycle Trail, along with the Litchfield and Lottie bridges for public and employee safety. Due to the conditions, a full assessment has not been completed.
The trail is closed to prevent further damage because some sections are unsafe to ride. What we do know is that there are still sections of trail with standing water on them and there are sections of trail where the trail tread has washed away. Some of the sections where the tread has eroded are not safe to ride due to exposed roots and narrow, loose, uneven tread.
Also, the closure is in effect to protect natural resources by preventing further erosion and protecting sensitive areas. Any additional rainfall we receive in the near future will worsen the current problems and/or cause additional damage.
Please contact the Francis Marion Ranger District for further information by calling 843-336-2200.
