• Greenwood Fire Update: McDougal Lake Campground now open, Trail remains closed.

  The Greenwood Fire Closure has been lifted, except for the McDougal Lake area. Forest staff assessed conditions this spring and posted signs to notify the public of potential risks of snags and weakened trees.

  Open: McDougal Lake Campground, Stony River Observation Site, Little Isabella Campground, Jackpot Trail. For the latest information on Jackpot Trail, visit MN DNR OHV trail conditions.

  Use caution! Be aware of your surroundings; watch for falling trees, especially during high winds, and in wet and flooded areas which can destabilize roots.

• Updated 6/6/2022 - Border Route Trail Tornado and Current Conditions

  Date(s): May 3, 2022

  A tornado swept through the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness approximately one-mile west of the Clearwater to Mountain Portage last fall.

  The main path of the the tornado damage has now been cleared off the Border Route Trail. There are still a few pockets of blowdown, and a dozen or so large trees that still need to be cleared but hikers can easily maneuver around them.

  Hike within your abilities, assume risk, and remember it is a wilderness.

• Sturgeon River Trail Partial Closure

  Date(s): Jun 29, 2020

  In June of 2018, a regularly scheduled bridge inspection was conducted on the Sturgeon River Trail bridges, and one was found to be unsafe for continued use and beyond reasonable repair. The Forest Service has officially removed the bridge. As a result, the portion of the Sturgeon River Trail system located between Forest Road 279 and Junction 4 will be closed indefinitely.
