Logging in vicinity of Harry Gates Hut

Alert

Backcountry skiers and snowmobilers will encounter logging operations this winter in the Burnt Mountain area south of Lime Park and Crooked Creek Pass.  See Map

Much of the road that backcountry skiers use to access the Harry Gates Hut will be plowed (NFSR 506), and much of the area immediately south of the hut and along the road will see active logging and hauling Monday through Friday.

At least three inches of snow will be left on the plowed roads for winter recreation. Skiers and snowmobilers should be alert for logging operations and changing snow conditions on the roads. The Forest Service will work with the Tenth Mountain Division Hut Association on a possible alternate route into the Harry Gates Hut that avoids logging operations and the plowed road.

The logging project is part of the White River’s efforts to improve lodgepole pine forest resiliency to insect outbreaks, reduce fuels for wildfires, and provide commercial wood products to local industry.

About 356 acres will be cut across multiple units that ranging from 40-85 acres in size. These units will largely be clear-cut, which is the most effective technique for regeneration in lodgepole pine forests. Logs will be hauled to the timber mill in Parshall, Colo.
