Prescribed burning is set to begin this week on the Middle Fork Ranger District

  • - Middle Fork Ranger District: Middle Fork Ranger District: Burning will begin Thursday, May 16 through Friday, May 17. The plan is to underburn 9 acres in the Armet Timber Sale area and monitor through the weekend. Underburn in the Crale Timber Sale area is planned for the week of May 20. These units are all located west of Oakridge/Westfir and will likely be visible from these communities or from Highway 58.

  • - McKenzie River Ranger District: The McKenzie River Ranger District plans to burn Honker 17 which is 66 acres on Friday, May 17. This unit is located east of McKenzie Bridge and smoke may be visible from Hwy 126 and Hwy 242.

All units will have appropriate mitigation measures in place, including handline/road prep, hose lays and sufficient staffing. On all units test fires will be completed prior to full ignitions to determine if continued prescribed fire operations will continue. Landscape treatments such as thinning create fuel loading inside of units that create heightened fire behavior and mortality during wildfire events. Prescribed fire removes large concentrations of fuels and builds resiliency and forest health. Fire applied under prescriptive parameters including flame height and spread, allow for a reduction of fuel under favorable conditions. These treatments reduce the threat of future fire, help create healthy stands, and are an imperative tool for fire managers.
