Bankhead National Forest

First Thinning in Loblolly Pine

With Upland Oak Desired Conditions

Field Trip Itinerary

February 27, 2008

The purpose of this field trip is to review and discuss thinnings of loblolly pine stands with the desired condition of upland oak forest or woodland. There have been questions about the condition of these loblolly stands after timber harvest has been completed and the small number of hardwoods seen in some of these post harvest areas. The concerns have centered on younger loblolly stands (15-30 years old). This field trip is designed to look at the condition of loblolly pre-harvest and to observe how these stands have been prepared for thinning. Stands that have already been harvested will be visited for comparison.
